Description
Cabriolets had been manufactured right from the start of 356 production, but the first open Porsche to make a significant impact was the Speedster, introduced in 1954 following the successful reception in the USA with a batch of 15 special roadsters.
With its sales declining, the Speedster was dropped in 1958 and replaced by the more civilised Convertible D, a more practical car than the Speedster boasting a larger protective windscreen, wind-up side windows and more comfortable seats while retaining the original's beautiful body lines and downward sloping waistline beloved of 356 enthusiasts. The D was built on the Speedster chassis with an almost identical body and considered to be a great improvement over the Speedster. Overall, the new car was 3½ inches taller.
With its preferred coachbuilder Reutter struggling to keep up with the ever increasing demand, Porsche sub-contracted cabriolet body construction to a number of different coachbuilders, Convertible D production being undertaken by Drauz of Heilbronn, hence the 'D' suffix. When the restyled Porsche 356B arrived in September 1959, convertible production transferred to D'Ieteren of Brussels. The 356A Convertible D model is one the rarest of Porsche 356 models, with only 1,331 made between August 1958 and September 1959.
Recently acquired by JD Classics this delightful example was totally restored in the USA by the well-known 356 specialist ‘European Collectables’ of Costa Mesa, California in 2013. With a production date of 2nd February 1959 the Convertible D was supplied in Meissen Blue with Black Leatherette interior. The Porsche Certificate of Authenticity also confirms Optional Equipment of Sealed Beam Headlights, USA Bumpers, Dunlop Tyres, ‘Borge’ Shock Absorbers and powered by the 1600cc, 60bhp engine. Chassis, engine and body Numbers all Match the vehicle's factory data sheet.
Acquired by the previous owner in 2014 and imported into the UK, this stunning Porsche has covered minimal mileage since restoration and is ready to be enjoyed.
